2010-12-07 · Habitus Habitus is one of Bourdieu’s landmark concepts, and is considered one of his greatest contributions to the field of sociology. Habitus is a sociological concept that has been in use for many years; even Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher, was familiar with the concept and developed his own theory on the concept of habitus. For Bourdieu, habitus and field can only exist in relation to each other. Although a field is constituted by the various social agents participating in it (and thus their habitus), a habitus, in effect, represents the transposition of objective structures of the field into the subjective structures of action and thought of the agent.

It may be, in the end, that as Bourdieu often appears to be saying, we might not have much room for agency. For Bourdieu, then, the concepts of capital, field and habitus were ultimately embedded in relations of power (Burkett, 2004: 236) and were part of a complex theory that sought to explain the way that social inequality is reproduced. Bourdieu claimed that the ability to reflect upon ones habitus is essential to social theoretical discourse and research by the premise that all fields are interdependent and not separate from the ‘other’. Bourdieu outlines four species of capital which are linked with habitus and key to understanding field theory.

Pierre Bourdieu – Wikipedia
Bourdieu wrote widely about language and linguistics, but his most far reaching engagement with the topic is in his use of linguistic reasoning to elaborate broader sociological concepts including habitus, field, standardization, legitimacy, censorship, and symbolic power. From the dialectical relationship between habitus and field, practices are established. I am no expert in Bourdieu’s work, despite my huge regard for it. In my Health and Social Change I drew on it to posit an altered – and class-driven – national habitus in the UK in the post-1970s era of neo-liberal or financial capitalism. The argument is taken up later, in some essays on the political field, written in the eighties and published in 2001 (Bourdieu, 2001).
