Dewey’s pragmatism “assigns a positive function to thought, that of reconstituting the present stage of things instead of merely knowing it” (LW II, 18). The “American Enlightenment” Dewey envisions is fueled by a type of philosophy which looks forward to a better future for which it actively works.
